Buy itLetchworth State Park, now a century old, grew out of a generous donation made by William Pryor Letchworth to the State of New York. The park's remarkable history reaches back as far as the last ice age. From the Portage Gorge to the mighty highbanks at Mount Morris, Letchworth State Park follows the flow of the Genesee River, exploring the natural and human events that have shaped this inspiring landscape. Drawing on historical images and regional folklore from the collections of the authors, the park, and various local sources, the reader is invited into the past of a park that has been called the "Grand Canyon of the East."

Review by P. Fries, 2009-08-11
I bought this book because I am from the area and I used to work with the author at Letchworth State Park (LSP) in the 70s - plus we used to carpool. Since I AM from the area, I was especially interested in learning more about the history of LSP. When I first received the book, I have to say I was disappointed that all of the pictures were in black and white. It's such a beautifully colorful park, so it only seemed appropriate that the more recent photos would be in color. However, once I got past that, I became engrossed in the historical information that Mr. Breslin included in the book along with many very old photographs - fascinating! I especially loved the information he provided about the CCC camps, especially because my father was one of those military men that helped 'build' the park. Generally, I'm not a history buff, but I LOVE this book!

I have known Letchworth park all my life and after reading this book, realized that I knew very little about the place I thought I knew so well. Once again, my geographical closeness to the park(30 Miles) peaks my interest, but I think that once you have visited "The Grand Canyon of the East", you will find this history amazing.

From cover to cover, there is no page that fails to give insight. Each photo, drawing, and map offers details that will interest anyone who has ever visited "the Grand Canyon of the East". This book is a pictorial walk through history, and despite that I grew up visiting the park; I feel more connected now than ever before, to the place, to the history, and to the people who came before. Breslin, Cook, et al have done a masterful job. Now, let's see what else Images of America has to offer.
